Bengaluru – The Certificate Programme in Appreciating Film Making at RV University’s School of Film, Media and Creative Arts (SoFMCA) commenced yesterday at RV Teachers College, with veteran filmmaker Mr. Rahul Rawail with an engaging session on the fundamentals of film direction. The Indian veteran filmmaker Rahul Rawail is also a Professor of Practice at the SoFMCA at RV University. The five-day workshop, running until October 25, 2024, at RV University, Bengaluru, promises to be a comprehensive exploration of film craft.
The opening day saw Rahul Rawail, Chairman of Jury at the 70th Indian National Film Awards, introducing participants to the what, why, and how of film direction, followed by an afternoon screening and discussion of the movie Arjun, a contemporary classic. The hero of the film Arjun, Sunny Deol, had a candid interaction with the students over facetime on their viewing experience of Arjun. Today’s sessions focus on appreciating emotion acting, continuing the programme’s hands-on approach to film education.
During these sessions, Director Rahul Rawail shared his insights, experiences, and anecdotes from his illustrious career. Attendees were fortunate to participate in discussions with the master filmmaker, gaining valuable insights into the craft of cinematic storytelling.
He said, “To keep cinema alive, we must embrace imagination and visual thinking. Today, the boundaries of regional cinema are dissolving as the quality of filmmaking across India rises – it’s all Indian cinema now. As directors, we carry the responsibility of having a 360-degree vision while crafting narratives. Continuous learning, deep thinking, and immersive storytelling are crucial for the future of our cinema. My advice to young filmmakers is to stay true to their passion and craft while being grounded in our rich cinematic heritage.”
Prof. (Dr.) Piyush Roy, Professor and Founding Dean, School of Film, Media and Creative Arts shared his enthusiasm about the event “At a time when film criticism or review is a preferred way for doing film themed workshops, SoFMCA doing an Appreciating Filmmaking and Direction workshop is unique. This takes the discussion back to the actual makers and their craft, which is the focus of our education – ‘Learn from the best, while training under the best’.Engaging with living legends of the cinematic craft like Rahul Rawail at a conversational level for young and aspirant filmmakers is a dream come true, and fostering such opportunities of inspiration is an integral element of our film school’s curriculum.”
The upcoming days will feature the presence of acclaimed industry professionals, including Music composer B. Ajaneesh Loknath (Jildavaru Kandante, Kantara), Cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda (KGF Series, Salaar), Director-lyricist Santhosh Ananddram (Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari, Raajkumara)
The program’s remaining schedule includes:
October 22: Appreciating Emotion Acting
October 23: Script-to-Screen
October 24: Analyzing Mise-en-scène
October 25: Seeing through the Third Eye
Each day combines morning lectures (10:00 AM-12:30 PM) with afternoon practical sessions (1:30-4:30 PM), including screenings and discussions of classic and contemporary cinema. The sessions are being moderated by Indian National Film Award-winning critic and Founding Dean of SoFMCA, Prof. (Dr.) Piyush Roy, along with faculty members.
The event provided an opportunity for exploration of the Indian film industry, bringing together film enthusiasts, aspiring filmmakers, and those who appreciate enrapturing storytelling. Rahul Rawail’s extensive range of films covered a variety of genres, making a significant impression on viewers of various ages and backgrounds.
