Istanbul/Ankara, August 10, 2025:

A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook western Turkey on Sunday morning, killing one elderly woman and injuring at least 29 others, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The quake struck Balikesir province’s Sındırgı district at a depth of about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles), with tremors felt as far away as Istanbul and Izmir. At least 16 buildings collapsed, including two mosque minarets, trapping several people under the debris. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, pulling four survivors from the rubble.

Officials confirmed that an 81-year-old woman lost her life when her home partially collapsed. While most of the injured sustained minor wounds, authorities warned that aftershocks could cause further damage. AFAD reported several tremors in the hours following the main quake, the strongest measuring 4.6 magnitude.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed condolences to the victims’ families and assured that all necessary aid and rescue efforts are underway. “Our nation stands united in the face of this disaster,” he said in a televised statement.

Local authorities have urged residents not to re-enter damaged structures until safety inspections are completed. Temporary shelters have been set up, and emergency aid, including food, blankets, and medical assistance, is being distributed in affected areas.

The quake comes as Turkey continues to grapple with seismic risks due to its location on several active fault lines. Experts have repeatedly warned of the need for stronger building regulations to mitigate the impact of future earthquakes.
