New Delhi: In a significant step towards ensuring fair and transparent competitive examinations, the President of India has given assent to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Act, 2026, officially bringing the amended law into force.
The legislation is aimed at tackling examination-related malpractices, including paper leaks, cheating, impersonation, organized fraud, and the use of unfair means in public examinations. The amendment strengthens the legal framework by introducing stricter provisions to deter individuals and organized groups involved in compromising the integrity of recruitment and entrance examinations.
According to the government, the amended law provides for tougher punishments, enhanced penalties, and stringent action against those found guilty of leaking question papers, facilitating cheating, or manipulating examination processes. The objective is to safeguard the interests of millions of students and job aspirants while restoring public confidence in the country’s examination system.
Public examinations conducted by central government agencies, recruitment boards, and other notified authorities are expected to benefit from the strengthened legal provisions. The government has consistently maintained that protecting the credibility of competitive examinations is essential for ensuring merit-based selection and equal opportunities for all candidates.
The amendment comes in the wake of several high-profile paper leak incidents that raised concerns about the security and fairness of competitive examinations across the country.
