New Delhi: BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital has announced the launch of its Comprehensive Lung Transplant Programme, expanding its advanced thoracic surgery and organ transplantation services for patients with end-stage lung disease.
The programme has been established to provide comprehensive evaluation, surgical treatment, and long-term post-transplant care for patients with irreversible lung diseases where conventional medical treatment is no longer effective. It is expected to benefit patients diagnosed with conditions such as interstitial lung disease (ILD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, bronchiectasis, and other advanced respiratory disorders that significantly impair lung function and quality of life.
Lung transplantation remains one of the most complex procedures in modern medicine and requires coordinated expertise across multiple specialties. Successful outcomes depend not only on the transplant surgery itself but also on careful patient selection, donor organ evaluation, advanced critical care, infection management, rehabilitation, and lifelong follow-up.
Lung transplantation is a surgical procedure in which one or both diseased lungs are replaced with healthy donor lungs. The procedure is generally recommended for carefully selected patients with end-stage lung diseases who continue to experience severe symptoms despite receiving optimal medical therapy. These include conditions such as advanced ILD, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, and other irreversible lung disorders that progressively reduce breathing capacity and quality of life.
The Comprehensive Lung Transplant Programme at BLK-Max Hospital is being led by Dr. Pramoj Jindal, Senior Director – Thoracic Surgery & Lung Transplantation, along with a multidisciplinary team comprising thoracic surgeons, pulmonologists, transplant physicians, intensivists, cardiac anaesthetists, rehabilitation specialists, physiotherapists, infectious disease experts, specialised nursing teams and transplant coordinators. The integrated team works together to provide seamless care from the initial assessment of transplant eligibility through surgery, recovery, and long-term monitoring.

Besides offering advanced surgical treatment, the programme also aims to improve awareness regarding timely referral for lung transplantation. Many patients with progressive lung diseases continue to receive medical treatment even after reaching advanced stages, delaying referral for transplant evaluation. Early identification of eligible patients allows better optimisation before surgery and can improve transplant outcomes.
The programme is supported by dedicated transplant intensive care units, advanced modular operating theatres, and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) facilities. ECMO is an advanced life-support system that temporarily performs the function of the lungs in critically ill patients with severe respiratory failure and plays an important role in supporting selected patients before, during, and after lung transplantation.
