Customers to get information about the freshness and quality of sweets; vendors required to display the last date of consumption on trays or counters

Ghaziabad: The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a significant step towards strengthening food safety in the state. Under the proposed arrangement, sweet shops across Uttar Pradesh will be required to display the expiry date or last date of consumption of sweets offered for sale. The objective is to protect consumers’ health and prevent the sale of spoiled or substandard sweets.

Expiry Dates to Be Displayed on Sweet Trays and Counters

Under the new arrangement, sweet vendors will have to clearly display the last date of consumption on each sweet tray or counter. This will enable customers to check the freshness and usability of sweets before purchasing them.

The measure is expected to be particularly important during festive seasons and wedding celebrations, when the demand for sweets rises significantly.

Move Aims to Curb the Sale of Spoiled Sweets

The Food Safety Department aims to improve food quality standards and ensure that consumers have access to safe food products. Inspections of sweet shops may be conducted to verify compliance with applicable food safety and storage regulations.

Action may also be taken against vendors found violating the applicable rules, in accordance with the relevant provisions.

Food Safety Department’s Monitoring Under Focus

According to Suresh Mishra, Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety Department, Ghaziabad, displaying expiry dates on sweets is an important step towards strengthening food safety.

The key question now is how effectively the arrangement will be implemented across Uttar Pradesh and how closely the Food Safety Department will monitor compliance. Consumers will also be watching to see what action is taken against shopkeepers who fail to follow the rules.
