Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi on Wednesday said that Tehran would welcome any initiative taken by India and other major global powers to maintain peace and stability in West Asia.
Addressing a select group of journalists in New Delhi, Gharibabadi said Iran is working on a new service and payment-based framework to regulate the movement of commercial vessels through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, in line with international norms and maritime regulations.
He also pointed to differences within the BRICS grouping over the ongoing regional conflict. According to him, the demand by “one member country” to condemn Iran prevented the bloc from issuing a unified statement on the issue. His remarks were widely interpreted as an indirect reference to the United Arab Emirates.
“We want India’s BRICS presidency to be successful. It does not send a good message to the world that BRICS is divided,” Gharibabadi said.
The Iranian minister’s remarks come at a time when tensions in West Asia remain high, with global powers closely monitoring developments in the Strait of Hormuz — a crucial maritime route for international oil trade and global energy supplies.
