Vice President Election: Opposition declares Margaret Alva as candidate of Vice President

New Delhi. On Sunday, the opposition political parties announced Margaret Alva as their joint candidate for the election of vice-president. Earlier on Saturday late evening, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had nominated Jagdeep Dhankhar as the Vice Presidential candidate.
Eighty-year-old Margaret Alva is fielded in the election of Vice President by the opposition. She is senior Congress leader and had been an MP for five times. Along with this, she has also been the Governor of Rajasthan. Margaret Alva will file her nomination papers on July 19.

In a meeting of leaders of 17 opposition parties held at the residence of National Congress Party President Sharad Pawar, the name of the joint candidate for Vice President was discussed and after discussing many names, in the end, a common consensus was reached on the name of Margaret Alva. The Aam Aadmi Party and the Trinamool Congress have also assured their support to Margaret Alva. In this way, Alva, the opposition candidate has support of 19 political parties in total.
It is believed that Jagdeep Dhankhar and Margaret Alva will be only candidates for the Vice President Election.

The last date for nomination for the Vice Presidential election is July 19. Polling will be held on August 6, while the election results will be declared on the same day with the counting of votes on August 11.
