Supreme Court approves UP Local Body elections with OBC reservation

New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Monday approved the Uttar Pradesh government to hold civic (local body) ections with OBC reservation.

The UP government had formed the OBC commission regarding OBC reservation. The commission had submitted the report to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in less than the stipulated time. The commission gave its report on March 7. After this, the government accepted the report of the commission in the cabinet meeting next day. After this, the government submitted the report to the Supreme Court and sought approval to hold elections on the basis of the commission’s report.

On Monday, the Supreme Court approved the report and gave approval to the Uttar Pradesh government. On behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said in the court that if the court approves, the state government can issue a notification in two days.

After this, on the basis of the report of the Commission regarding OBC reservation, the Supreme Court gave approval to the Uttar Pradesh government to conduct civic elections. The UP government can issue notification for local body elections shortly in this week.
